AFROBEAT AND ITS IMPACT ON AMERICAN POP CULTURE
Afrobeat as a genre of music originated in the 60s and 70s as a blend of traditional Yoruba music with jazz and funk. Nigerian artist Fela Kuti who was well known for his musical talent and his participation in post-colonial African politics is often identified with Afrobeat. It was his efforts that allowed Afrobeat to become firmly rooted in African social and political commentary. Over the years, Afrobeat has slowly crossed over to America and now there is not one club or an event in America that does not have DJs playing Afrobeat soundtracks. The Yoruba DJs are booked for parties and events where they integrate Nigerian music with the American pop. In the past few years, American airwaves have been infiltrated by Afrobeat. The genre is bringing awareness regarding Yoruba culture and music to the African-in-the-diaspora and also among the general populace of America. Oduduwa Exxodus Radio is also trying to bring to people- talk shows and music, that would change the understanding of Yoruba culture among the masses. The radio has a pool of DJs who are available for bookings at events and parties. Afrobeat has made its way into the pop, jazz, techno, and even rap scene of the USA and is slowly spreading its wings across other parts of the world. It is bringing people closer to the African culture and introducing them to the lives and times of the Yoruba people.
