Afrobeat as a genre of music originated in the 60s and 70s as a blend of traditional Yoruba music with jazz and funk. Nigerian artist Fela Kuti who was well known for his musical talent and his participation in post-colonial African politics is often identified with Afrobeat. It was his efforts that allowed Afrobeat to become firmly rooted in African social and political commentary. Over the years, Afrobeat has slowly crossed over to America and now there is not one club or an event in America that does not have DJs playing Afrobeat soundtracks.
